Most people end up in the emergency room because they lack adequate information about their symptoms. MedAdvice provides that critical information so that consumers can make informed healthcare choices, getting appropriate care at the right time. Over 70% of the people who call MedAdvice, expecting to use the emergency room at the time of their call, self-select a lower cost alternative, such as home care remedies. But MedAdvice doesn't just reduce unnecessary ER and doctor visits. It also saves lives...up to 10% of callers report urgent or life-threatening symptoms where immediate access to medical treatment is vital. For more than 15 years, we've proven that MedAdvice saves lives, time, and money.

EXPERIENCE MATTERS: MedAdvice is staffed with registered nurses averaging more than 10 years of clinical experience. The nurses utilize PHYSICIAN-APPROVED guidelines to provide your group with the most helpful and accurate health information available. The service is available through a convenient toll-free telephone call to live registered nurses. The following describes tips for members on how to best utilize MedAdvice:

How Should I Use This Service?

Of course, this service is NOT designed to take the place of medical care through your physician. But, it does give you the opportunity to:

  • Speak privately with a caring registered nurse about your medical questions and concerns
  • Search for over 600 pre-recorded audio library topics in our online catalog (available in English and Spanish)
  • Search for hundreds of printable health topics, developed from more than 10,000 sources of information

Here are some examples of when you may want to use it:

  • Your family member gets sick and has multiple physical symptoms
  • You don't understand the difference between Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease so you search for the topic in our online catalog
  • You twist your ankle and are wondering if you need to have an X-ray
  • You think your spouse has heartburn and you want to know if he should visit the emergency room
  • You or a family member are facing a surgical procedure and would like to know what some of the options are

Should I Use MedAdvice For ALL My Healthcare Concerns?

Family caregivers or loved ones may battle frequent illnesses, and they find comfort knowing that a knowledgeable nurse is just a phone call away. Our nurses don't diagnose. Based on the caller's symptoms, the nurses will recommend levels of care access (ie, ER, urgent care clinic, doctor's office visit, etc.). The decision about whether to seek care is always the caller's decision.

In the case of an emergency, members should NOT use the MedAdvice service; instead, always call 911 immediately. An "emergency" occurs when eligible members think they or their family members are experiencing a life-threatening condition or event.
